Italian Separatists Hold Vote

Italian separatists held an informal referendum Sunday to kindle support for splitting northern Italy from the rest of the country.

The Northern League urged voters to cast ballots in favor of independence at more than 39,000 makeshift polling places in central and northern Italy. Results are expected to be announced today.

Last year, Northern League leader Umberto Bossi declared an “independent republic of Padania” encompassing an affluent region roughly north of the Po River and including Italy’s business capital, Milan.
