L.C. Senior Receives National Scholarship

Anna Adolphson, a senior at Lewis and Clark High School, won the national Principal’s Leadership Award and a $1,000 scholarship.

She competed against approximately 7,500 school winners from throughout the United States. Each contestant was nominated by his or her high school principal.

Adolphson is class valedictorian, president of her senior class, lettered in soccer and tennis, was captain of the cheerleading squad and a four-year member of the National Honor Society. She has also been active in a variety of service and community programs.

Students at Frontier Middle School in Moses Lake placed fourth in the National Science Olympiad held in Raleigh, N.C. on May 17.

The students competed with 4,179 other teams nationwide.

They won the right to compete nationally after winning the state competition in April, said their coach, Chris Koester.

This is the fourth time in seven years Frontier has sent teams to the national tournament.

The students are:

Jessie Ham, Jennifer Beeman, Niki Greenwalt, Rachel Hesse, Samantha Frueh, Winter Davis, Erin Ham, Lisa Hesse and Kristen Erickson.

Mike Brotherton, Dirk Sanders, Joe Nickell, Kevin Duchow, Mark Claassen, Ben Hesse, Shea Haynes, Dan Klehn, Alan Barelocher and Allen Smith.

Other Inland Northwest teams to place in the state competition were:

Frontier Middle School, White Team, third; coach Jeff Tye.

Cheney Middle School, fifth; coaches Sue and Tom Lienhard.

High School Division:

Moses Lake High School, Team No. 1, third place; coach Laurie Odegaard.

Ferris High School, Team No. 1, fifth; coach Cinda Parton.

Bob King and Galt Pettitt, second-year law students at Gonzaga University, won first place at GU School of Law’s Criminal Procedure competition. They are now eligible to compete on the regional level in San Diego next fall.

Three Inland Northwest students graduated at the end of winter quarter from Central Washington University. The students and their majors are listed alphabetically by their hometowns:

Newport: Barry McClain, business administration.

Royal City: Amy Para, computer science.

Spokane: Ray Eickmeyer, paramedic.

Several Spokane students attending Seattle Pacific University were on the Dean’s List for the winter quarter. To earn a spot, students must maintain a 3.50 grade-point average. The students and their parents are:

Katherine Beeman, daughter of Teri Beeman; Melanie Burtzoff, daughter of Vern and Nancy Burtzoff; Eric Drozdov, son of Edward and Pamela Drozdov; Elias Hattamer, son of Eric Hattamer and Cathrine Kilgore; Michael Sterner, son of Dennis and Karen Sterner; Christina Walton, daughter of Leland and Virginia Walton and Gloria Wood, daughter of Richard and Virginia Wood.

Sean Conklin, Kelly Garrity and Tom Hefferan, Gonzaga University School of Law’s moot court petitioner team of second-year students, won their bracket in the West Regional of the National Appellate Advocacy Competition in Seattle.

They now advance to the national finals in August in Austin, Texas.

GU’s respondent team of second-year students Mike Keyes, Paul Mitchell and Katie Yount won a brief award for placing fourth in the regional.
