Worker Injured As Shoplifter Flees
A Rosauers employee was slightly injured Friday afternoon by a shoplifter’s car door.
The employee from the Rosauers store at 907 W. 14th was knocked to the ground while trying to open the driver’s-side door of the suspect’s car. The shoplifter sped away, and the employee was not seriously injured, police said.
The suspect was accused of stealing several packages of meat, worth about $40, from the store. Another employee reported seeing the shoplifter trying to hide the packages in his coat.
The store manager told police the suspect had stolen other items in the past week, but employees were unable to catch him.
Friday, while officers were still at the supermarket, the registered owner of the getaway car drove the car back to the store. The owner told police she’d let a man use her car and identified him to police. Police are looking for the suspect but have not released his name.
Suspect arrested in bike theft
A woman who mopped her kitchen floor and then left to visit her next-door neighbor while the linoleum dried returned home 90 minutes later to discover several items stolen.
The woman told Spokane police she returned home in the 500 block of South Ferrall about 10 p.m. May 20 and found the outside lights on and several items, including a mountain bike, missing.
After the robbery, a police officer drove around the neighborhood and spotted a man sitting astride a mountain bike that matched the description of the bicycle stolen from the woman.
When the man saw the officer’s patrol car, he tried to flee on the bike.
Police arrested James O. Munson, 29, 4822 North Lee, on charges of possession of stolen property and residential burglary.
Teens charged in burglary
Two 16-year-old boys were arrested by Spokane police Friday on charges of residential burglary.
One of the suspects was captured by police while trying to flee from the 3500 block of East Ninth Avenue about 3 p.m.
The second suspect fled in a 1975 Chrysler, but police arrested him after the car he was driving smashed into two parked cars. The suspect lost control of the car while trying to round a corner at Fifth and Thor at high speed. There were no injuries.
Both teens were taken to Juvenile Detention.
Burglar digs potting soil
Not even potting soil is safe from prowlers anymore.
Someone broke into Empire Floral Nursery, 2900 Glenrose Road, and stole six 40-pound bags of premix soil valued at $300.
Sheriff’s deputies were told that someone climbed over a chain-link fence between 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday and took the bags by hoisting them over the fence.
It’s not the first time soil has been taken from the nursery, deputies reported.
“I don’t know if it’s somebody starting a little marijuana grow or if they’re too cheap to buy potting soil,” said sheriff’s spokesman Dave Reagan.
Jewelry stolen from home
A woman returned home to find her back door open, her house ransacked and several items missing.
The resident told sheriff’s deputies her home was broken into sometime between 5:30 p.m. last Thursday and 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The woman reported the theft of a $400 sewing machine, $600 color television set, $700 color TV and two diamond rings valued at $100 each from her home in the 7400 block of West 49th Avenue. Also missing was a $1,000 antique necklace, a jewelry box and compact discs.
Computer game missing
Sheriff’s deputies suspect kids or teenagers may have broken into Central Pre-Mix at 508 N. Government Way between 6 p.m. May 20 and 4 a.m. May 21.
Police reported that all three buildings on the property had broken windows.
A computer game, four pairs of overalls and a bag of candy were reported missing.
Burglar escapes with office safe
A $300 phone and a $200 combination safe were taken from a mobile home used as an office in the 8000 block of West Highway 2.
The mobile home, which is surrounded by an 8-foot fence topped by barbed wire, was broken into about 1 p.m. May 21. One of the trailer’s windows was broken out.
Stamps taken in burglary
The office of Key Rock gravel pit, 9404 S. Cheney-Spokane Road, was broken into between May 19 and May 20. Sheriff’s deputies report that a roll of stamps worth $30, an answering machine and a small amount of cash were taken. Police have no suspects.
