Giants Survive Home-Plate Outs

Bill Mueller’s two-run single capped a three-run rally in the seventh inning and San Francisco went on to victory over Atlanta, even though the Giants had three runners thrown out at the plate.

The Giants managed only two hits through the first six innings against John Smoltz (6-4) and fell behind 2-0. But they came up with six hits in the next one-plus innings to knock him from the game and post their third straight victory.

Rockies 6, Marlins 5

Miami

Ellis Burks drove in two runs with a two-out double, capping a three-run rally in the ninth inning to help Colorado beat Florida.

Colorado trailed 4-0 before Larry Walker, Andres Galarraga and Dante Bichette hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning off Alex Fernandez. They came in a span of eight pitches and totaled 1,261 feet.

Astros 10, Padres 6

Houston

Darryl Kile finished off his impressive May with another win, and Houston sent San Diego to its fifth straight loss. Kile (6-2) went 5-0 with a 1.20 ERA in May.

Cubs 2, Reds 1

Chicago

Rookie Brant Brown’s RBI double with one out in the eighth inning lifted Chicago to victory over Cincinnati.

Cardinals 4, Dodgers 2

St. Louis

Rookie Matt Morris allowed one run in eight innings and hit an RBI double as St. Louis beat Los Angeles for its fourth victory in five games.

Gary Gaetti homered, singled and scored twice for the Cardinals.

Clearing the bases

Houston Astros outfielder Bob Abreu and left-handed pitcher Sid Fernandez have had operations for arm ailments that will sideline them for several weeks. … Gary Sheffield took early batting practice to test his sore left thumb, then was activated from the disabled list by the Florida Marlins. … St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Brian Jordan, out almost a month with a bulging disc in his back, took a few tentative steps toward returning to the lineup by batting some balls into a net and shagging a few balls in the outfield.
