Jones’ Lawyer Details How Clinton Can Avoid Trial

The lawyer for Paula Jones said Thursday that to avoid a trial on sexual harassment charges, President Clinton would have to explicitly acknowledge that he remembers meeting Jones in a Little Rock hotel room in 1991, as well as give her a “significant” cash settlement to compensate her for damage to her reputation.

Gilbert Davis said in an interview that for Clinton to settle the case with Jones before trial, “It is essential that he provide some sort of strong statement that would leave no doubt in the public’s mind about her reputation, one that shows she is not some sort of compliant female who could be summoned to have sex with the governor.”

Davis’ demand that Clinton admit he remembers meeting Jones is similar to one he made in 1994 during negotiations aimed at reaching a settlement before they broke down. At that time, Clinton said he did not remember meeting Jones.
