Two Local Teens Chosen As Finalists In Pageant

Michelle Sobrepena, daughter of Gloria Ries and Bob Sobrepena, is a state finalist in the Miss Washington American Teen Pageant. She is an honor student, an ASB representative and manager of Salk Middle School’s Drill Team.

Lisa Pohle, daughter of Teresa Collins of Spokane, is a state finalist in the Miss Washington American Teen Pageant. The honor-roll student and member of the National Honor Society is also active in gymnastics and photography.

Katherine Anselmo, a senior history major at Seattle University, received the University of Delaware’s Hagley Fellowship to pursue a doctorate in history and a museum studies certificate.

The $9,900 fellowship covers full tuition and a stipend.

She is the daughter of Frank and Patricia Anselmo and a 1993 graduate of Mead High School.

The Esther Reed Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution received several awards at the recent state conference in Spokane, including a certificate for the 3,055 hours of volunteer work contributed by its members.

For the third consecutive year, the group received the Florence C. Kemp Trophy for gaining the highest percentage in increased membership.

Carmen Hagman, chapter registrar, received a special award for her dedication to the society.

Whitworth College has been named to The John Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges.

The award was given to 135 four-year colleges in 42 states that inspire students to develop and strengthen moral reasoning skills, encourage spiritual growth and moral values; a school that advocates a drug-free life-style and conducts a critical assessment of character-building programs and activities.

Christine Gregoire, Washington state attorney general and a 1977 Gonzaga Law School graduate, received the Myra Bradwell Award from GU’s Women’s Law Caucus.

The annual award is presented to a law school alumna who demonstrates a keen interest in promoting women’s rights and issues in the legal arena.
