Two Spokane Men Report Hatchet-Swinging Attacker
Two Spokane residents told police they were attacked Wednesday by a hatchet-swinging man who yelled racial slurs at them.
The incident occurred about 2:45 a.m. at the 7-Eleven store at Fifth and Thor, police said.
The two men, one of whom is black, said they had just left the store and were walking to their car when a Chevrolet van pulled up beside them.
Four white men inside the van began yelling racial slurs as the two victims got inside their car, police said.
One of the men riding in the van then got out and ran to the car with a hatchet, the victims said. He used the weapon to smash the driver’s side window, they said.
The hatchet apparently slipped out of the man’s hand and landed inside the car, authorities said. No one was injured.
The attacker got back in the van, which drove away.
Police say they seized the hatchet and other evidence at the scene.
The victims said the man who attacked them was in his 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 175 pounds. He has short brown hair with sideburns.
