Braves Top Giants With Rally In 9th

Michael Tucker singled into the right-field corner with one out in the ninth, scoring Kenny Lofton with the winning run as the Atlanta Braves defeated the visiting San Francisco Giants 3-2 Friday night.

Lofton walked with one out against Doug Henry (2-1) and stole second. On the next pitch, Tucker sent a liner over the glove of first baseman J.T. Snow and Lofton trotted home.

Cardinals 2, Dodgers 1

St. Louis

Mark Guthrie relieved with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and walked Delino DeShields on four pitches.

Starters Andy Benes and Ramon Martinez both pitched well, and also helped themselves at the plate, Benes with an RBI double for the Cardinals and Martinez by doubling and scoring the Dodgers’ run.

Marlins 4, Rockies 3 (12)

Miami

Bobby Bonilla singled home the winning run with one out in the 12th inning after Florida overcame a three-run deficit.

Devon White, activated from the disabled list before the game, led off the 12th with a double against Jerry Dipoto (1-1). Gary Sheffield walked, Moises Alou grounded into a forceout at second, and Bonilla hit a high hopper past first baseman Andres Galarraga.

Padres 9, Astros 2

Houston

Will Cunnane was a big hit in his first major league start, pitching six strong innings and driving in three runs.

Steve Finley added a two-run homer for the Padres, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Cunnane had a two-run triple in a five-run fourth and added an RBI single in the fifth.

Mets 7, Phillies 3

New York

Carl Everett, Todd Hundley and Butch Huskey each hit solo home runs to give Dave Mlicki his first win as a starter since 1995. Surprising New York won its eighth game in its last 11.

Pirates 10, Expos 2

Pittsburgh

Kevin Young hit a three-run homer in the first inning and the usually slow-starting Pittsburgh Pirates opened a quick five-run lead.

The Pirates had been outscored 33-19 in the first inning until Young followed Adrian Brown’s walk and Midre Cummings’ single with his homer.

Reds 5, Cubs 1

Chicago

Barry Larkin homered and doubled, and Mike Kelly and Jeff Branson each hit RBI triples. The only run Pete Schourek (4-4) allowed came on Shawon Dunston’s homer in the seventh.
