Rockets Leaking Nerve Gas

Compiled From Wire Services

Workers have found four rockets leaking trace amounts of deadly nerve gas in a concrete and earthen bunker at the U.S. Army’s Umatilla Chemical Depot.

The crew that found the leaking 155 mm rockets sealed them in steel “overpack” containers, said depot spokeswoman Donna Fuzi. The storage bunker is being monitored daily as an additional precaution, she said.

Workers began looking for “leakers” after a trace amount of the deadly nerve gas GB, also known as sarin, was detected inside a bunker.

The gas did not escape from the storage bunker and never posed a threat to the public, workers at the depot near Hermiston or the environment, Fuzi said.
