Cougars Allow 10 Points In Smashing Sun Devils

Washington State led the entire way Friday, dominating Arizona State in a Pac-10 Conference volleyball match in which the Sun Devils were held to 10 points.

The Cougars, ranked No. 10 in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll, defeated Arizona State 15-1, 15-6, 15-3 before a crowd of 756 in Bohler Gym.

All but two Washington State players recorded a kill. Shannon Wyckoff led WSU with 16 kills and 12 digs. Elis Arias followed with 12 kills with a .611 hitting percentage and 10 digs. Stephanie Papke led all players with 23 assists. Samantha Spink contributed 11 assists in the third game.

The biggest surprise of the match for Washington State may have been the play of junior transfer Lucie Vratnickova in her first start in place of the injured Wendy Rouse (dislocated thumb).

“Lucie did a very good job,” WSU coach Cindy Fredrick said. “(She was) very nervous. It was nice to have a looser night, to have a little more fun, because it’s tough to do in the Pac-10.”

The Cougars host the No.13 Arizona Wildcats tonight, also in Bohler Gym.

The Bulldogs were tough on defense as well, forcing 32 attack errors and holding USF to a dismal minus-.017 attack percentage.

Whitworth (5-17, 3-11) was unable to hold a 2-0 lead, losing to Pacific Lutheran 9-15, 14-16, 15-10, 15-10, 15-9 in a NCIC match at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Lindsay Hunter led the Pirates offense with 18 kills and Brooke Evans had 17 kills on a sharp .333 attack percentage.
