Ten years ago: Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping retired from the Communist Party’s Central Committee. Ibrahim Hussein of Kenya won the New York City Marathon in two hours, 11 minutes and one second; Priscilla Welch of Britain led the women in two hours, 30 minutes and 16 seconds.

Five years ago: The space shuttle Columbia landed at Cape Canaveral, Fla., ending a 10-day mission that included the deployment of an Italian satellite.

One year ago: Accused of peddling access to the Oval Office, President Clinton demanded an end to what he called the “escalating arms race” for political money. Bob Dole countered with his own solutions to “a growing scandal” of Democratic financial sins.
