Cda Swimmer Breaks Two State Records

Coeur d’Alene junior Brad Kleinjans broke a pair of state records Saturday at Moscow, helping the Vikings take second place in the State A-1 swimming championships.

Kleinjans won the 100 backstroke, breaking the record he set last year, in 53.12 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 48.92.

The Vikings also broke a state record when they took first place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1 minute, 31.52 seconds.

CdA scored 240 points.

Lake City’s boys ended up in 12th place with 75 points. Freestyler Ben Seigler took second in the 200 at 1:52.03 and third in the 500 with 5:11.42.

It was an exciting day, too, for the Post Falls girls.

“We got a big honking trophy,” coach Cindy Clutter said after her first-year team took third place with 189 points.

“We were expecting a little award at the end and we were shocked to see this huge thing.”

Freshman Desiree Johnson led the Trojans by placing first in the 50 freestyle in 25.69 and swimming 1:10.10 to break the state record in the 100 backstroke.

Johnson also had a hand in a winning 200 medley relay. Johnson and teammates Janelle Ruen, Jessica Isenberg and Bernadette Detar were timed in 1:58.91.

Lake City sophomore Sarah Thilo won two events to lead her team to fifth place with 172 points.

Thilo, first last year in the 200 and 500 freestyles, doubled again, winning the 100 in 56.54 and the 500 in 5:32.85.

Southern schools dominated. Boise High’s boys took first place with 329.50 points, and Borah High School was crowned champion for the girls after accumulating 249 points.

Cross country

Lake City’s Charlie Miller came in fourth at the state meet in Boise with a time of 16:24, advancing from 44th place at the half-mile mark.

Miller’s strong showing helped the Timberwolves claim third place with 113 points. The LC girls placed 10th with 277.

Sandpoint’s Nicole Maloney, first at every league meet this fall, ran eighth with a time of 20:03.

Coeur d’Alene, seventh with 171 points, had three girls run their personal best. Kira Thompson finished 26th with a time of 20:58.13, Eva Unruh placed 29th in 21:01.92 and Liza Covington ran 21:21.14 for 38th place.
