Mavs Surprise Sonics Dallas Rallies In Final 5 Minutes To Ruin Seattle’s Home Opener

Associated Press

The Dallas Mavericks have averaged 59 losses a year the past seven seasons.

That explains why the Mavs reacted like they’d won a playoff game after a stunning 89-81 comeback victory Saturday over the Seattle SuperSonics.

When Khalid Reeves hit the go-ahead basket with 1:44 left, 7-6 Shawn Bradley and several teammates jumped off the bench waving towels over their heads.

Reeves scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter as the Mavericks, who closed the game with a 23-2 run, improved to 2-0 for the first time in their 18-year history.

“I don’t know if they let down or not,” Reeves said. “We made some big shots and key plays. They didn’t.”

The Sonics led 79-66 with 5 minutes left before the Mavs reeled off 15 straight points to take an 81-79 lead. Hersey Hawkins tied the game at 81, but Reeves scored six straight points in the final minute before Michael Finley’s dunk wrapped up the victory.

“Anything you can do to build confidence is big,” Mavs coach Jim Cleamons said.

Finley led the Mavs with 20 points. Bradley had 17 points and 14 rebounds.

Dale Ellis led the Sonics with 15 points.

Dallas’ defense dictated play in the fourth quarter as the Sonics managed only two points over the last 3:55.

Sonics coach George Karl was crestfallen over his team’s fourth-quarter collapse.

“It was a demoralizing loss,” Karl said. “We lost our composure and our confidence.”

Dallas outscored Seattle 34-10 in the final period and forced the Sonics into 10 fourth-quarter turnovers.
