HOW THEY SCORED

First quarter

ASU 7, WSU 0

Lenzie Jackson 13-yard pass from Ryan Kealy, Robert Nycz kick. 24 yards, six plays, 1:46. ASU gets great field position after WSU is forced to punt out of its own end zone. ASU converts on third-and-10, then scores when Jackson gets past WSU cornerback Dee Moronkola on third-and-goal from the 13.

Second quarter

ASU 14, WSU 0

Kenny Mitchell 8-yard pass from Kealy, Nycz kick. 67 yards, eight plays, 2:40. ASU reverse gains 29 yards on drive’s first play. Kealy adds two 10-yard completions, including one on third-and-7, before lobbing scoring pass over WSU cornerback LeJuan Gibbons.

ASU 17, WSU 0

Nycz 31-yard field goal. 27 yards, seven plays, 3:21. Facing third-and-14 from the WSU 45, Kealy finds Mitchell for a 23-yard gain. Kealy benefits from excellent pass protection.

ASU 24, WSU 0

Jackson 24-yard pass from Kealy, Nycz kick. 80 yards, six plays, 1:53. Kealy pass for gains of 17 and 28 yards on drive’s first two plays. Jackson scores on third-and-9.

ASU 24, WSU 7

Chris Jackson 22-yard pass from Ryan Leaf, Ryan Lindell kick. 78 yards, four plays, 1:29. DeJuan Gilmore carries for 59 yards on drive’s first play. On scoring play, Leaf rolls left to avoid the rush, then finds Jackson at the 10. Jackson fakes out ASU defensive backs J’Juan Cherry and Mitchell Freedman on his way into end zone.

Third quarter

ASU 24, WSU 10

Lindell 43-yard field goal. 66 yards, eight plays, 2:06. Leaf completes consecutive passes for 27, 21 and 12 yards as WSU moves to the ASU 14. WSU opts for the field goal after two incompletions and a sack.

ASU 24, WSU 17

Gilmore 3-yard run, Lindell kick. 70 yards, six plays, 2:32. On third-and-15 from the WSU 25, Leaf waits and waits in the pocket, sidestepping defender after defender before finding McWashington wide open near the 50. McWashington, who was uncovered because ASU cornerback Courtney Jackson had fallen, runs all the way to the 9 for a 66-yard gain.

Fourth quarter

WSU 25, ASU 24

McWashington 11-yard pass from Leaf, Leaf run. 62 yards, seven plays, 2:04. Leaf completes 4 of 5 passes for 75 yards on the drive. ASU is whistled twice for unsportsmanlike conduct after the TD, giving WSU possession inside the 1 for the conversion. Instead of kicking the extra point, Leaf scores easily on the two-point keeper.

ASU 30, WSU 25

Tariq McDonald 6-yard pass from Kealy, pass fails. 80 yards, seven plays, 3:21. Kealy finds Mitchell for 39 yards on first-and-10 from the WSU 47. McDonald scores against Gibbons. Sun Devils use last timeout before two-point conversion try because they have only 10 men on the field. Ray Jackson intercepts Kealy on eventual two-point try.

ASU 37, WSU 25

Hamilton Mee 69-yard fumble return, Nycz kick. Freedman sacks Leaf, forcing fumble, and Mee scoops it up.

ASU 44, WSU 25

Derrick Ford fumble recovery, Nycz kick. Ford beats left tackle Rob Rainville, forces fumble and recovers it in the end zone. ASU 44, WSU 31 Kevin McKenzie 3 pass from Leaf. Pass failed.

QUOTABLE

“We have five guys blocking, and they had six coming. He hit my arm and I fumbled. I should have picked up the ball or made a tackle, but there’s nothing I can do about it now.”

-WSU quarterback Ryan Leaf on Mitchell Freedman’s fourth-quarter sack, which forced a fumble recovered by Hamilton Mee.

“The better team won. You get a quarterback like that that’s on top of the world, and you know they’re coming back. But we held together.”

-ASU’s Mee, who returned Leaf’s fumble 69 yards for game-breaking touchdown.
