Floods Displace Thousands, Bring Disease To Ethiopia

Compiled From Wire Services

Floods caused by overflowing rivers in eastern Ethiopia have left 57 people dead and more than 4,000 displaced, state-run radio reported Sunday.

The rising rivers also washed away 9,000 head of livestock in the Ogaden region on the border with Somalia, authorities said.

Ethiopian radio quoted health officials as saying malaria and dysentery had reappeared in areas hit by flooding, but it was not known how many people were affected.

Unusually heavy seasonal rains and severe flooding have also hit southern Somalia, southern Sudan and coastal Kenya.
