East Valley Edges Cheney For State Berth

The entertaining East Valley-Cheney soccer series came down to one, average-looking goal.

But Jessica Bowen’s shot from close range means EV’s season continues and Cheney’s ends.

Bowen scored an unassisted goal 9 minutes into the match Tuesday to lift the Knights (12-3-1) over visiting Cheney 1-0 in the girls District 7-3A title match.

The teams had split their season series 1-1-1, including Cheney’s 3-2 win last Saturday to force a final match.

EV opens the State 3A playoffs at 1 p.m. Saturday at home against Hanford, the No. 2 team from the Mid-Valley League. West Valley (Yakima) defeated Hanford 2-0 on Tuesday, the Rams’ third win this year over the Falcons.

Cheney finished 10-4-2.

Richland defeated visiting Kamiakin 1-0 in a shootout to win the District 5/6 title.

Richland (15-0) opens the State 4A playoffs at 1 p.m. Saturday at home against the Greater Spokane League’s No. 2. Kamiakin (15-3-2) travels to the GSL’s No. 1 at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Ferris (13-5) plays at Mead (16-0) at 3 p.m. today to determine the GSL’s state seeding.
