Mccoy Leading In Chewelah

County races

Chewelah mayoral candidate Ron McCoy had a razor-thin lead over Lew Arnold with two of the city’s three precincts counted at press time.

McCoy, a Safeway manager, and Chewelah Independent newspaper columnist Arnold both outpolled incumbent Mayor Gloria Davidson in a three-way primary. Arnold had a six-vote edge in the primary, but Davidson threw her support to McCoy.

Also in Chewelah, Gene DuCharme had an almost 2-1 lead over recently appointed Councilman Chalmer Jones.

No other Stevens County results were available late Tuesday.

Pend Oreille County

In Pend Oreille County’s only mayoral race, Ione town Councilman Arlen Baker outpolled Councilwoman Cindy Thompson 75-58 to replace retiring Mayor Mike Kyle.

Elsewhere in the county, challenger Wayne Antcliff defeated incumbent Newport Councilman James Kolthoff 283-149.

Also, a Fire Protection District 1 emergency medical levy passed with 69 percent support, but a Cemetery District 1 operating levy failed with 50.4 percent opposition.

Lincoln County

In Lincoln County’s hottest mayoral race, write-in challenger Barbara Danner defeated incumbent Sprague Mayor Evalyne Tabor, 93-90.

In Davenport council races, Donna Batch overpowered Michael Sullivan 442-186, while Eleanor MacDonald defeated James Allison 422-227.

Virginia Henderson outpolled Michael Murphy 135-74 for a vacancy on the Reardan City Council, Don Rolfe beat Wally Goddard 253-74 for a Wilbur City Council vacancy and Rebecca Kolterman outpolled Tom Clavel 218-180 for an Odessa council vacancy.

Here are the results of Lincoln County money measures, which require 60 percent support to pass: Park and Recreation District 3 improvement levy failing with 50.6 percent support, operating levy failing with 56.1 percent support; Hospital District 3 construction bonds failing with 57.5 percent; and Creston street levy failing with 57.6 percent.

Whitman County

In Whitman County, a criminal justice sales tax was being defeated with 60.1 percent opposition, and a sales tax to pay for juvenile detention also was losing with 60.4 percent opposition.

Elsewhere in Whitman County, three contested Pullman City Council races were decided: Floyd Larson, 944, Micki Archuleta, 470; Sue Hinz, 827, Travis Beard, 156; Alison McLeod, 690, Edward Prince, 275.

Ferry County

In Ferry County, a two-year operating levy for the Curlew School District passed with 65.7 percent support, 272-142. The levy will collect $62,000 in 1998, at an estimated rate of $1.19 per $1,000 of assessed value, and $36,000 in 1999, at a rate of 69 cents per $1,000 assessed value.
