Ten years ago: Supreme Court nominee Douglas H. Ginsburg admitted using marijuana several times in the 1960s and 70s, calling it a mistake.

Five years ago: Malice Green, a black motorist, died when he was beaten by Detroit police officers outside a suspected crack house. (Larry Nevers and Walter Budzyn were convicted of second-degree murder, but the Michigan Supreme Court has ordered a new trial for Budzyn, saying jurors were improperly influenced.)

One year ago: Voters returned President Clinton to the White House for a second term but kept Congress in Republican control. Russian President Boris Yeltsin successfully underwent heart bypass surgery.
