Former WBC heavyweight title holder Oliver McCall won in Nashville, Tenn., with a technical knockout of Bryan Yates in the eighth round. The fight was stopped at the 1:36 mark when Yates, whose record dropped to 15-16, went down after a series of jabs from McCall, 29-7.

At Robinsonville, Miss., Tim Witherspoon, trying to position himself for a shot at a third heavyweight title, needed less than 2 minutes to knock out Levi Billups in his first bout in nearly a year.

Voters in 11 southwestern Pennsylvania counties overwhelmingly rejected a proposed half-penny-on-the-dollar sales tax increase to finance two new stadiums (baseball and football), a renovated Pittsburgh convention center and other projects.

UCLA basketball coach Steve Lavin denied Tuesday that a decision has been reached regarding the status of junior center Jelani McCoy. ESPN and the Long Beach Press-Telegram reported that McCoy failed a recent drug test. He could face suspension by failing the test.
