City Approves Contract Increase

Work to protect the Chestnut Street Bridge on Hangman Creek ended up costing the city more than expected in the original contract.

On Monday, the Spokane City Council approved a $7,320 increase in its contract with Red Diamond Construction Co. of the Spokane Valley.

The money was approved to compensate the contractor for extra work removing silt from under the north span of the bridge in Hangman Valley.

The silt had to be removed to allow for greater stream flow after the rock was installed.

Red Diamond was hired to install rip-rap rock beneath the creek’s bridges to protect bridge piers exposed by heavy floods in each of the past two winters.

The original contract called for spending up to $40,000.

The work was ordered by the federal government, which is contributing 75 percent of the cost. The city and state will split the remaining 25 percent.

The contract called for planting the upper banks with sod and seed.

In other business, the council approved a land swap with a private developer in the vicinity of 17th and Grandview.

The West Jackson Co. is developing the new Grandview annexation with its Westridge Addition. One of the conditions in the plat requires realignment of the intersection of 17th and Grandview at the developer’s expense.

The trade will make the traffic improvements possible and will increase the value of other city-owned lots in the area, according to a staff report.
