Jones Gives Up Title

Compiled From Wire Services

Roy Jones Jr. will relinquish his WBC light heavyweight title rather than defend it against Michael Nunn in a bout not televised by HBO-TVKO, according to a news release issued by Square Ring Inc., his promotional company.

Jones said that he’d surrender the title rather than violate his contract with HBO-TVKO.

Pernell “Sweetpea” Whitaker’s urine test taken before his fight in Connecticut last month showed traces of cocaine, his promoter Dino Duva said.

But Whitaker, reached at his home, disputed the finding.

“I can tell you one thing: it’s not true,” Whitaker said. “That’s all I’ve got to say.”
