Special Service Will Dedicate Missionary Project
The Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church will dedicate a missionary project with a special unified service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the Whitworth College Cowles Auditorium.
Whitworth Presbyterian, which has sent mission work teams to Kenya, Mexico, Romania, Alaska, Russia and Central America, is sponsoring a mission project at home - eight miles to the north, said the Rev. Jim Singleton, pastor.
Some 30 families from the Whitworth church will “seed” the new congregation, which will meet in the new Mt. Spokane-Mead High School with the Rev. Eric Peterson as pastor.
Singleton, who envisioned the new church four years ago, said Whitworth Presbyterian is putting $100,000 into the project, including money toward buying 10 acres on the northwest corner of Colbert Road and Highway 2 as a building site.
The Colbert church is organized by Inland Northwest Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church (USA) - its first in the Spokane-North Idaho region in more than a decade.
The 50 churches of Inland Northwest Presbytery have pledged $18,000 for the Colbert project in 1998, and the Synod of Alaska-Northwest added another $20,000. The national church organization will contribute $90,000 in program funds over the next five years.
Starting a main-line Protestant denomination congregation bucks the trend of emerging unaffiliated churches, Singleton said.
More than 200 people are expected to attend Colbert Presbyterian Church’s inaugural service at 9:30 a.m., Nov. 16, in the new Mt. Spokane-Mead High School, 6015 E. Mt. Spokane Park Drive. A nursery and Sunday school classes for children up to grade four will be offered. Classes will expand as the church grows.

Christian music concerts
Several Christian musical groups will stage concerts in the area during the next couple weeks. Here’s a schedule:
Pianist Mark Kelso and vocalist Vikki True will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Met for the Interfaith Hospitality Network, which has helped 26 families find a job and a place to live since its inception seven months ago.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors if purchased in advance. Tickets at the door will be $15.
The network, comprised of more than 30 Spokane churches, works to house and feed homeless families. With cold winter weather nearly here, the demand for the network’s services is sure to increase.

Two Christian music concerts sponsored by KRLF-FM in Pullman are scheduled during Dad’s Weekend at Washington State University at the Living Faith Fellowship, 1035 S. Grand.
Morris Chapman, a nationally known worship leader with Promise Keepers, will perform at 7 tonight. Tickets are $9 in advance; $12 at the door.
The Sound, a harmonizing quarter out of Houston, Texas, will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.
The performance is free, but reservations are needed due to limited seating.

Singers and musicians from Spokane-area churches will gather at the Rock of Ages Christian Fellowship, 2131 W. Woodside, at 7 p.m. Sunday for “One Voice - One Heart,” a benefit concert for the Caritas Center.
The center is a neighborhood outreach program run by several Northwest Spokane churches to help provide assistance to families in need in the Seven- and Nine-Mile and the Mead-Colbert area.
Caritas Center provides help to elderly and disabled neighbors in their homes, emergency utility assistance, food, personal and household items, laundry tokens … Concert tickets are $1. Proceeds will help with emergency utility assistance this winter.
New Community Church, a Calvary Chapel, will sponsor a concert by Randy Stonehill, Brett Williams and Gary Hemenway Nov. 15, at Spokane Falls Community College. The performance begins at 7 p.m. in the Music Building Auditorium.
Stonehill, a pioneer of contemporary Christian music, has written and recorded music for more than 25 years. Williams, from the Seattle area, often has his songs aired on Christian radio stations. Hemenway, originally from Portland, is now a pastor in the Coeur d’Alene area.
Concert tickets, available at area Christian bookstores, are $6 in advance, and $8 at the door.
The Florida Boys, an award-winning Southern gospel quartet, will appear in concert at 6 p.m., Nov. 16, at the Newport High School gym. The quartet received the Living Legend Award at the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion.
The concert is sponsored by J.C.’s Lighthouse, a Newport organization which assists the poor.
Tickets, $12 in advance and $15 at the door, are available at the Safeway store in Newport, the Fishers of Men Bible Book Store in Cheney, and the Book Nook in Coeur d’Alene.
Orthodox World Peace
Jim Forrest, secretary of the Orthodox World Peace Fellowship in Amsterdam, Holland, will lecture on “Praying with Icons” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, 4750 E. 20th in Post Falls.
The lecture, based on Forrest’s book of that name, will be preceded by Vespers at 6 p.m. and a potluck dinner at 6:30. All are invited to attend the free evening.

‘Dying to Live’
Elijah House, an international ministry dedicated to restoring families and relationships, will present “Dying to Live - Coming into a Full Relationship With Jesus,” Friday and Nov. 15.
The free seminar at Rock of Ages Christian Fellowship, 2131 W. Woodside, is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15.

Pro-life seminar
Human Life of Washington and the Knights of Columbus will present a seminar, “Life Principles,” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 302 E. Boone.
Those attending are to bring a sack lunch; beverages will be provided.
Cost of the seminar is $10, which includes all course material.
