Healthy Qb Ah-Yat Sparks Um

Associated Press

Brian Ah-Yat passed for 302 of his 341 yards in the first half, and Montana built a 24-7 halftime lead on the way to a 37-7 win over Portland State on Saturday night at Portland.

The Grizzlies ran up 444 total yards, and the Vikings couldn’t generate the scoring punch they had produced in successive wins over Montana State and Sacramento State.

Ah-Yat threw for two touchdowns in the first half and scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Ah-Yat hit Brian Gales on the first TD pass, and later hooked up with freshman Jim Farris for a school-record 93-yard pass play.

Ah-Yat’s touchdown run with 4:38 left in the game was his first rushing score of the season after being hobbled by injuries.

Cal Poly SLO 20, MSU 9

With the wind at his back and the game on the line, Alan Beilke kicked a 50-yard field goal with six seconds remaining to lift Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo over Montana State in Bozeman, Mont.

The field goal capped a nine-play, 58-yard drive that started on the Cal Poly 9-yard-line following a botched field-goal attempt by MSU (5-4) with 1:59 remaining.

Cal Poly, an independent team, is ranked 23rd in the NCAA Division I-AA poll.
