Local Cross Country Runners Capture Gold At State Meets

The longest streak ended and the longest streak was established as Spokane-area athletes and teams struck gold at Saturday’s state cross country meets at Sun Willows Golf Course.

University’s boys won the 4A title to put a halt to Mead’s nine-year stranglehold. Earlier in the day, East Valley won the 3A championship to become the first girls team at any level to win four consecutive titles.

Locals won nine of the 17 individual or team titles. Other champions were: Tom Becker, Mt. Spokane, 4A boys; Emily Hawkins, Ferris, 4A girls; Melanie Frostad, EV, 3A girls; Mike Witt, Lakeside, 2A boys; Lakeside’s team; Samantha Clarke, St. George’s, 1A/B girls; and Tyler Byers, Ferris, wheelchair division.
