‘Wild Snow’ Coming

By The Spokesman-Review

Backcountry skiing

Colorado backcountry expert Louis Dawson is bringing a polished multimedia program probing the where and why of backcountry skiing and snowboarding to Eastern Washington University on Tuesday.

Dawson will provide live commentary about ski and snowboard mountaineers beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Showalter Auditorium in Cheney.

The free show includes door prizes and a signing of Dawson’s latest book, “Wild Snow: A Historical Guide to North American Ski Mountaineering, which is a finalist at the Banff Mountain Book Festival.

Dawson, 45, is the only man to climb up and ski down all 54 of Colorado’s peaks that are higher than 14,000 feet. “People forget you have to climb before you can ski in the backcountry,” he said. “You are as much a climber as you are skier.”

“The Wild Snow Show,” is the second presentation of the 1997-98 EWU Speaker Series.
