Man Pleads Guilty To Shotgun Assault

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Bayview man pleaded guilty Monday to threatening his girlfriend with a shotgun.

David C. Bass, 27, faces sentencing next month on the aggravated assault charge after striking a plea agreement with prosecutors. Bass admitted wielding the shotgun during a fight he had with Mindy Bailey, the mother of his four children, on Sept. 6.

A sheriff’s report of the incident said Bass shoved the shotgun into Bailey’s mouth and tried to load it while he held her down. Bailey wriggled loose and Bass angrily broke the shotgun on a chair, the sheriff’s report said.

In court Monday, Bass denied shoving the gun into Bailey’s mouth, but admitted pointing it at her face. Bass told deputies he never intended to shoot Bailey.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to recommend Bass be sentenced to jail instead of prison and will not seek additional jail time because a gun was used to commit the crime.
