Defending champion Pete Sampras, ranked No. 1 in the world, drew three tough opponents for the first round of the ATP Tour World Championship in Hanover, Germany.
Sampras’ group includes Patrick Rafter, Greg Rusedski and Carlos Moya. Michael Chang, No. 2 in the world, is seeded in a group, which includes Jonas Bjorkman, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Sergi Bruguera.
In today’s round, Sampras plays Moya, Rafter plays Rusedski and Chang plays Bruguera.
Steffi Graf withdrew from next month’s inaugural Masters of Champions tournament in Frankfurt, Germany, delaying her comeback and angering organizers.
Graf, 28, had several times confirmed her intention of playing in the exhibition event, to be played from Dec. 3-7 but sent organizers notification that she will not play.
Graf also has withdrawn from the Nov. 25 First Union/Signet Bank Tennis Challenge in Baltimore.
