Coat Drive Under Way In Cheney

Nina Culver Correspondent

Several churches in Cheney are teaming up with the Cheney Clothing Bank and area businesses to collect coats for neighborhood toddlers, children and adults.

The drive will run through Nov. 23, and warm winter coats will be distributed in early December.

Organizers realized the need to have their own coat drive after discovering that Cheney residents have only limited access to coats collected through the Coats-4-Kids drive held in Spokane, says Jan Abrams, chair of the Children and Poverty Task Force.

Currently the only outlet for Cheney residents is the West Central Community Center in Spokane, at 1603 N. Belt, and people must bring their children with them, along with a medical coupon, WIC coupon or other form of address verification.

Drop-off points in Cheney are at the Mitchell’s IGA, Tomlinson-Black Realty and The Wash Tub. The Wash Tub will also wash all the donated coats.

The coats will be distributed at the Cheney Clothing Bank, 630 Third Street, which is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m on Tuesdays. Additional distribution locations will be announced later.

Grief outlet at Cheney Methodist

The United Methodist Church of Cheney, 204 Fourth St., will host two Longest Night services Sunday at 8:30 and 11 a.m.

The services are designed for those who are dealing with grief during the holiday season. The services will also be services of remembrance, so those attending are encouraged to bring photos of their loved ones who have died.

For more information, call the church at 235-4600.

St John hosting bazaar

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th, will host its annual Christmas bazaar Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The church will provide assisted car parking, and shoppers will be greeted with a bagpipe performance.

Tours of the cathedral will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tots can get their pictures taken with St. Nick from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Pictures are two for $5.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost will vary depending on what is purchased.

The bazaar will feature crafts, Christmas decorations, books, Advent wreaths and toys. Several items will be raffled off, including floral arrangements, gift certificates, and a gourmet dinner for eight. Raffle tickets are $1 each.

St. Mark’s to hold special services

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th, will hold a special “Missa Luba” service Sunday at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. The special services will be done in Congolese style.

Soloists Ann Fennessy, Lauren Rants, Randi Von Ellefson and Lowell Savage will perform.

Ready for winter?

Winter is fast approaching, and now is a good time to make sure your car is ready for the cold weather.

The Cheney Community Church, 1307 Third, will offer an Autumn Auto Check in the church parking lot from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday. Duo to perform Sunday Pianist Mark Kelso and soloist Vikki True will perform at the 9 and 11 a.m. worship services Sunday at Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard. All are invited to attend.
