Rezoning Hearing For Cathay Inn On Monday

FROM FOR THE RECORD (Friday, November 14, 1997): Correction A hearing on a proposed rezoning for expansion of the Cathay Inn restaurant was held earlier this month. A headline in Thursday’s North Side Voice gave an incorrect day for the hearing. Public comment will be accepted by the city hearing examiner through Monday.

Comments on the proposed rezoning of three lots to accommodate the expansion of the Cathay Inn restaurant will be accepted by the city hearing examiner through Monday.

The three lots front on Kiernan Avenue, just east of Division Street, and are zoned residential. Eddie Eng, owner of the 47-year old Chinese restaurant, wants the lots rezoned to community business.

Cathay Inn now is about 5,000 square feet and has parking for 50 cars. Eng wants to build a larger restaurant and double the size of the parking lot.

The existing restaurant property, along with the three lots on Kiernan, would total about 1.4 acres.

Eng’s father, Tom Eng, opened the restaurant in 1950. The original restaurant wasn’t much bigger than a living room. The restaurant underwent major renovations in 1959, 1970 and 1989.

A hearing on the proposal was held earlier this month. But because of concerns that some neighbors might not have been properly notified of the plans, hearing examiner Greg Smith agreed to keep the record open for comments after the hearing.
