Woman Killed In Fire Identified; Cause Of Blaze Still Unknown

From Staff And Wire Reports

Investigators from Spokane County Fire District 8 still are trying to determine what started a house fire that killed an elderly woman Tuesday.

Nora F. Haynes died at Sacred Heart Medical Center about three hours after firefighters pulled her from her burning house in the 4700 block of South Havana.

The 74-year-old woman died of smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

The blaze broke out about 11:40 a.m. on the top floor of the two-story house and quickly filled the home with flames and smoke, witnesses said.

Firefighters found Haynes unconscious near a sliding-glass door that leads to a deck at the back of the house. She had burns over 15 percent of her body.

They performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until an ambulance arrived.

Haynes lived in the house with her adult daughter, who was not home at the time of the fire.
