Gamecocks Get Late Trey For Ot Win

Melvin Watson’s 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in overtime gave No. 7 South Carolina a 76-72 win over Maryland on Friday night at the Black Coaches Association Classic in Minneapolis.

Watson, who forced overtime with a 3-pointer in the final minute of regulation, hit the winning shot 20 seconds after Laron Profit had given the Terrapins a 72-71 lead with a 3-pointer of his own.

Redshirt freshman Antonio Grant made two free throws with 1.3 seconds remaining to clinch the win for the Gamecocks in the season-opener for both teams. BJ McKie led South Carolina with 24 points.

In the other game of the doubleheader, Sam Jacobson scored 13 points to lead Minnesota to a 68-55 victory over Villanova.

(2) Kansas 99, Santa Clara 73 In Lawrence, Kan., Raef LaFrentz dominated the inside with 22 points and 19 rebounds as the Jayhawks beat the Broncos. Paul Pierce scored 18 points to go over 1,000 in his career as Kansas started its 100th season.

(4) N.Carolina 84, Middle Tenn. 56 Playing without Dean Smith for the first time in 36 years, the Tar Heels and new coach Bill Guthridge got a gimme over the Blue Raiders in Chapel Hill, N.C.

(5) Clemson 67, N.C.-Wilmington 50 In Clemson, S.C., Terrell McIntyre charged up the Tigers with six second-half 3-pointers as they pulled away from the Seahawks.

(9) Purdue 119, Long Island 95 In West Lafayette, Ind., Chad Austin was one of six Boilermakers to reach double-digits, scoring 22 points as they shot a school record 77 percent in beating the Blackbirds.

(15) Iowa 105, Chicago State 60 In Iowa City, Iowa, Ryan Bowen had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman Dean Oliver made a successful debut at point guard as the Hawkeyes opened up a 14-0 lead in less than 5 minutes and breezed past the Cougars.

(24) Temple 59, (17) Indiana 53 In Philadelphia, Julian Dunkley scored 12 points on four 3-pointers and the Owls forced 23 turnovers and tied a school record with 19 steals in beating the Hoosiers.
