Passenger Dies When Car Rolls

From Staff And Wire Reports

A College Place, Wash., man was killed in Adams County early Friday when the car he was riding in slid into a field and rolled, Washington State Patrol troopers said.

Dale Phelps, 37, died at the scene about a mile south of Ralston, troopers said.

The driver, Richard Rolen, also 37, of Walla Walla, remained at Sacred Heart Medical Center in critical condition late Friday.

The two were northbound on state Highway 261 about 8:15 a.m. Friday when Rolen lost control of a 1984 Chevrolet Camaro on the icy road, troopers said. The car slid across southbound lanes of traffic, into a field and rolled once. Phelps was thrown from the car, troopers said.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt.
