Sue Hille, program coordinator for the Spokane Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Center, was selected from a field of 23 people to receive the 1997 Sister Peter Claver Award.

The annual award honors those who exemplify the qualities of Sister Peter Claver, who was Sacred Heart Hospital’s administrator for 30 years. Claver is remembered for her compassion, humility, wisdom, deep faith in God and her service to the community.

Hille received the award during a ceremony in October.

She has worked for SCAN since 1984 and led the center to become the nation’s largest all-volunteer parent-aide program. The program’s 175 volunteers serve more than 150 families.

The two women who nominated Hille spoke of the qualities she and Claver shared.

“Sue embodies a number of the qualities attributed to Sister Peter Claver from a great sense of humor to respectfulness, integrity and reliance on God,” wrote Pam Copeland and Julie Flisakowski. “But the quality they both exemplify is their commitment and dedication to service, particularly to the poor.”

The women wrote that Hille works well with the people she serves, winning the trust of even the most troubled clients: “Because of her genuine sincerity, Sue is often able to engage even the most distrustful high-risk parents in services.

“Her sincere interest in her clients is also evidenced by the fact that many maintain a relationship with her long after their cases have been successfully closed at SCAN.”

Hille plans to retire next year, but she and her husband already have purchased a home near downtown, where they will minister to street kids.

Others nominated for the award, listed in alphabetical order, were: Kay Anderson, Sister Patty Beattie, Dr. Ralph Berg, Charlene Miller Clark, the Rev. Bernard Coughlin, Dr. Michael Donlan, Betty Haspedis, Jerome Haupt, Dorothy Heanley, Virginia Hutton, Bruno Kensok, Judy Korbe, Shannon Loeffler, Dr. Stan Malnar, Mary Moller, Dr. John Moyer, Denny Murphy, Brenda Nord, Dr. D.
