In 1777: the Continental Congress approved the Articles of Confederation, precursor to the U.S. Constitution.

In 1806: Explorer Zebulon Pike spotted the mountaintop now known as Pikes Peak.

In 1940: The first 75,000 men were called to military duty under peacetime conscription.

In 1969: A quarter of a million protesters staged a peaceful demonstration in Washington, D.C., against the Vietnam War.

In 1986: A Nicaraguan tribunal convicted American Eugene Hasenfus of charges related to his role in delivering arms to Contra rebels, and sentenced him to 30 years in prison. He was pardoned a month later.
