Canucks Win First For Their New Coach

Associated Press

Mike Keenan earned his first win as coach of the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday, as Alexander Mogilny scored twice in a 4-1 victory over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes.

The win gave Vancouver a three-game unbeaten streak after losing 10 straight. The Hurricanes had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Keenan replaced Tom Renney as head coach of the Canucks on Thursday, after Vancouver had opened the season with a 3-13-2 record.

Defenseman Dana Murzyn gave Vancouver a 2-1 lead 6 minutes into the second as his slap shot found the net over the left shoulder of Carolina goaltender Sean Burke.

Vancouver took a two-goal lead with 59 seconds remaining in the period as Mogilny finished off a nice three-way passing play by taking Grant Ledyard’s feed at the side of the net and slipping it past a sprawling Burke. Mogilny’s second of the game, on the power play 12 minutes into the third period, put the game away for Vancouver.

Rod Brind’Amour scored two goals in the third period, including the game-winner with 1 minute left, to give the host Philadelphia Flyers a 3-2 win over the struggling Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning lost their ninth straight game and extended their winless streak to 15 (0-14-1). Both are franchise records.

The Flyers, who have lost only once in their last nine games (5-1-3), foiled Jacques Demers’ bid for his first win as Tampa Bay’s coach.

Mike Modano set up shorthanded goals by Sergei Zubov and Jere Lehtinen as the visiting Dallas Stars beat Anaheim 4-0 behind goaltender Ed Belfour’s league-leading fourth shutout.

Belfour improved his road record to 7-0-2 and extending Anaheim’s winless streak to four games. He has posted 10 victories and five of his 35 career shutouts against the Ducks, the most by any goalie.
