Nic’s The Sentinel Wins National Collegiate Awards

The Sentinel, North Idaho College’s student newspaper, recently won two first-place awards and top honors at the Associated Collegiate Press convention held in Chicago.

Noppadol Paothong, Sentinel photo editor and Thailand native, and Stephanie Schreiber won first place in the feature photography and stand-alone cartoon categories, respectively.

Angie Schwintek Critchfield, former Sentinel cartoonist and Sandpoint resident, took second place for stand-alone cartoons, while former reporter Melody Martz, of Sandpoint, won third place for Story of the Year in the diversity category.

The Sentinel earned second place nationally for Best of Show among community college tabloid newspapers for the second consecutive year. The ACP competition includes college and university newspapers and magazines from around the nation.

Mary Maxam, Coeur d’Alene resident and artist, recently won the Grumbacher Medallion Art Award for Outstanding Achievement for her watercolor painting, “Job Jars.”

Maxam, who received the award through MTWS of Missoula, was presented with a commemorative Grumbacher Gold Medallion and a selection of Grumbacher professional art supplies.

“Job Jars” depicts a group of glass jars holding a collection of items such as pens, pencils, scissors and brushes blended with analagous colors of yellows, magentas, oranges and active brushwork.

Grumbacher works in a variety of media, including oil colors, acrylic colors, watercolors, sculpture, photography, calligraphy and pastels.

Local Whitman College students received academic distinction for the 1997 spring semester by earning a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 and completing and passing a minimum of 12 credits. Students are listed by hometowns.

Coeur d’Alene: Erin Carlson, a junior sociology major and daughter of Michael and Judy Carlson of Coeur d’Alene; Aaron Stabel, a junior psychology major and son of Paul and Nancy Stabel of Coeur d’Alene; and Molly Gerber, a freshman, a 1996 graduate of Lake City High School and daughter of David and Suzanne Gerber of Coeur d’Alene.

David R. Drake, of Moscow, Idaho, graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington State University.

April M. Stangle, of Sandpoint recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham.

Annette Durbin and Scott Berger, both of Coeur d’Alene recently each received a $500 scholarship from the Downtown Business Association.

Rosauer’s Family Restaurant and Supermarket in Coeur d’Alene recently received the Coeur d’Alene Rotary’s Employer of the Year Award for employing TESH students.

The store was commended for an excellent job in training disabled and disadvantaged citizens to enter the mainstream workplace as productive employees.

Jason Tesky of Coeur d’Alene will be graduating from the Lewis-Clark State College outreach program in December and is majoring in business administration with an emphasis on accounting.

Tesky has received exemplary grades and evaluations. He served as president of the Business Student Organization and is a member of the LCSC Ambassadors.
