Temple Coach Resigns

Compiled From Wire Services

Temple University football coach Ron Dickerson resigned after failing to post a winning record in any of his five seasons. Dickerson, 49, was 8-47 overall and 4-31 in the Big East Conference since being hired before the 1993 season.

Temple was 3-8 overall and 3-4 in the Big East this season, the school’s most wins since going 7-4 in 1990.

A University of Louisville football official says he - not coach Ron Cooper - hired two strippers who exposed their breasts at a 1996 golf event.

“It’s totally my fault. I run the golf outing. (Cooper) had nothing to do with it,” said Kevin Beck, director of the university’s football operations. “It’s not something I’m proud of. It was poor judgment on my part. I corrected it as soon as I could,”

Cooper’s team lost to Memphis on Saturday, closing a 1-10 season in which home attendance steadily declined. Cooper is finishing the third year of a five-year contract and new athletic director Tom Jurich has said he will decide on the coach’s status today.
