Expansion Of Mead Practice Fields To Begin In Spring

The Mead School Board is proceeding with plans to expand practice fields at Mead High School. The fields are located north of the school.

“We hope to have that started in the spring,” said John Dormaier, head of Mead construction services.

Expansion and renovation of the current fields is expected to cost $1.5 million. The project is expected to be complete by August of next year, Dormaier said.

A new softball field and two baseball fields, one for games and one for practice, will be installed. Spokane County will lease the land for the new fields to the district, he said.

On the existing site, the competition baseball field will be turned into a practice softball field.

The renovation work on the existing fields would begin in mid-May 1998 after use of the existing fields for spring sports has ended.

The first work would begin at the east side with the construction of a new track and field events area; a competition football-soccer field; new tennis courts and a new storage, restroom and concessions building.

The new track and sodded field would be complete for the 1999 spring sports season, the tennis courts would be ready for the 1999 season along with the concessions building.

The football, soccer and other fields would be seeded and would not be available until the 1999 fall sports season. All soccer practices and games and some softball practices and games will have to be scheduled elsewhere for the 1999 spring season.

The construction of the fields will coincide with the multi-million dollar modernization of Mead High School. The $1.5 million cost for expansion and renovation of practice fields is not figured into the modernization project.

Dormaier said bids for both projects will be submitted in the spring.

Twosome scores high

Seniors Adam Lausche and Daniel Grimes of Shadle Park High School have both been recognized as “commended scholars” in the 1997 National Merit Scholarship competition.

Entry into the competition is based on scores earned on the PSAT which the two took as juniors. Lausche and Grimes scored in the top 35,000 of the more than one million students who took the test nationwide.
