Wcc Honors Gu’s Streufert
Gonzaga University record-setting freshman forward Sara Streufert has been named to the All-West Coast Conference women’s soccer second team.
Shannon Stanford, a junior defender from Redmond, Wash., received honorable mention recognition in the league coaches’ voting announced Wednesday.
Streufert, a graduate of Spokane’s University High, didn’t waste any time getting into the Bulldogs’ record book. She set Gonzaga single-season records for goals (9) and points (20), and also set a single-match record with her four goals in a 7-0 win over Whitman College in her second career match.
Streufert tied for sixth in the WCC goals chase, and finished in a three-way tie for 10th in league scoring. She was edged by Megan Horvath of regular-season co-champion Santa Clara University for freshman of the year honors.
Coach Ric Grenell was narrowly beaten by Santa Clara’s Jerry Smith for coach of the year.
The Bulldogs, 1-16-3 a year ago, improved to 8-12-0 this year.
Mandy Clemens gave SCU a sweep of the major awards by being named WCC player of the year.
