Cbs Squeaks By Nbc For Weekly TV Ratings Victory

The scorned women of “Bella Mafia” and kid-friendly antics of Bill Cosby helped CBS score a narrow win over NBC in the television ratings last week.

CBS had a 10.4 rating and 17 share for the week, beating NBC’s 10.3 rating and 16 share, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday. ABC finished with a 9.1 rating and 15 share. Fox had an 8.4 rating and 13 share.

While critically panned, the first part of the “Bella Mafia” miniseries on CBS placed seventh in the week’s ratings. Bill Cosby’s “Kids Say the Darndest Things” special brightened CBS’s normally moribund Friday night lineup with a 13th-place showing. CBS announced Tuesday that “Kids” would become a regular Friday series starting Jan. 9.

Although the “NBC Nightly News” won the evening race with a 9.2 rating and 17 share, CBS’s resurgence was again the big story. “The CBS Evening News” finished in second place with an 8.9 rating and 17 share, its first victory over ABC’s “World News Tonight” in a non-Olympic week since 1992. ABC had an 8.7 rating and 16 share.

An “X” in parentheses denotes one-time-only presentation. A rating measures the percentage of the nation’s estimated 97 million TV homes. Each ratings point represents 980,000 households.
