Bulldogs Run Away From Tulsa, 78-40

College men’s basketball

Richie Frahm scored 24 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Gonzaga to a 78-40 win over Tulsa Friday in the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The Bulldogs (2-0) shot 53 percent from the field and took advantage of 22 Golden Hurricane turnovers to move into the second-round winners’ bracket.

“I felt like early in the season it’s difficult to know how consistent you’re going to be,” said first-year Gonzaga coach Dan Monson. “I was really pleased with our defensive play and our preparation and understanding of how we wanted to go at them.

“We didn’t execute our half-court offense very well and that’s something we’ll have to work on. We scored a lot of points off our defense in transition. It was a good team win and gives us something to build on.”

Axel Dench added 14 points for Gonzaga.

Tulsa (1-1) shot 33 percent from the field and relinquished its only lead in the first 2 minutes. Gonzaga led by more than 30 points for much of the second half, with Dench and Frahm hitting jumpers nearly at will.

Four Tulsa players scored six points, and Michael Ruffin gathered in five rebounds. Frahm also had five rebounds for Gonzaga.

Frahm accounted for one-third of the Bulldogs’ first-half production. His 11 points included three 3-pointers.

Gonzaga plays Mississippi State, a 66-64 winner over Alaska Fairbanks, today in the tournament’s second round.
