Sally Behm Is Dead At 89 Longtime Valley Businesswoman Ran Ice Cream Store

Longtime Spokane Valley businesswoman Sally L. Behm died Wednesday, just two months after the death of her husband of 68 years.

Mrs. Behm, who was born in Sweden, was 89.

With her husband, Dick, and their family, Mrs. Behm came to the Spokane Valley from Western Washington in 1950, when they acquired Valley Creamery.

While her husband ran the creamery operation, Mrs. Behm ran the Behms’ ice cream store and lunch counter on East Sprague Avenue from 1950 until 1973. There, she gave hundreds of Valley teenagers their first jobs.

Mrs. Behm was two years old when she came to the United States from Sweden after the death of her father.

Her mother died when she was seven, and Mrs. Behm was raised in St. Paul, Minn., by her older sister.

She was married in 1929. Shortly afterward, Mrs. Behm and her husband moved to Seattle, making the six-week drive to their new home in a Ford Model T roadster.

Mrs. Behm was active in several business-oriented women’s clubs and was a long-time member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a son, Dick Behm Jr. of the Spokane Valley, and a daughter, Carol Elliott of Valleyford.

Memorial service will at 2 p.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3606 S. Schaefer Road. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home, 1400 S. Pines Road.
