Tacoma Edges Ccs For Women’s Soccer Crown

Tournament most valuable player Melissa Buckman scored two second-half goals Saturday to lift Tacoma over Community Colleges of Spokane 2-1 in the NWAACC women’s soccer title match at Bothell, Wash.

The Titans won their second consecutive title.

CCS led 1-0 for 50 minutes. Holly Vanwert scored at 5 minutes when Titans goalkeeper Athena Toffry couldn’t make a clean save.

Will Edwards set up two early goals as Green River defeated CCS 2-1 in the men’s match for third and fourth places at Bothell.

Paul Johnson of CCS set up Kelly Tifft’s late goal, then had a last-minute corner kick hit the left post.

Clark defeated Edmonds 2-0 in the championship match for its first title.

Volleyball

Ynez Carrasco totaled 25 kills and 15 digs as visiting Santa Clara (19-9, 8-6) ended Gonzaga’s season with a 15-10, 15-11, 11-15, 15-11 West Coast Conference decision.

The Zags (9-21, 3-11) closed their season with six consecutive losses. Theresa Spink ended her GU career with 17 kills and 14 digs.

GU won the third game after trailing 9-4. The Zags trailed 12-11 in the fourth when Carrasco served the final three points.

CCS’ day at the NWAACC championships in Bellevue, Wash., ended with a 15-7, 15-3 loss to Columbia Basin in the consolation bracket.

Ashlee Dowdy had six kills for the Hawks, who shared the East Division title with CCS. JoEne Heimbigner of CCS, who had 10 assists, made the all-tourney second team.

Tourney MVP Jody Jabanek had 35 digs as Chemeketa won its first title by defeating Mt. Hood 15-11, 15-11, 6-15, 15-5.

Big Sky co-champion Eastern Washington (22-5) will open the conference tournament in Sacramento, Calif., at 5 p.m. Friday.

The Eagles will meet Friday morning’s winner between Northern Arizona (17-9) and Montana (7-22). Sacramento State (21-8), the tourney host because it swept EWU, opens at 7:30 against the winner between Montana State (18-11) and Cal State Northridge (14-14).

The championship match, for a berth in the NCAA tournament, is Saturday night at 7.
