Idaho high school football

Weiser’s Aaron Thomason ran for 216 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Wolverines to a 21-13 victory over Marsh Valley and the A-2 State football championship Saturday in Holt Arena.

Thomason was almost unstoppable, averaging 6 yards per carry. He had a 50-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to put the Wolverines up 14-7 at halftime.

Marsh Valley had tied the score seconds earlier when senior linebacker Nick Zweigart jumped on a Weiser fumble. From the 10-yard line, Brent Vaughan took a double handoff into the end zone.

The Eagles kept Weiser from scoring in the third quarter by holding the ball most of the period, ending with Vaughan’s touchdown run from less than a yard out. The extra point failed, leaving Weiser up 14-13.

Thomason scored the clinching touchdown with less than 2 minutes left.

Marsh Valley rushed for 153 yards and junior quarterback Tyson Wakley passed for 47 yards with two interceptions. Vaughan gained 91 yards on 21 carries.

A3: Homedale 30, Firth 21

Also at Pocatello, Darren Uranga threw three touchdown passes to Nick Shanley, to lead Homedale (12-0) to a 30-21 victory over Firth (10-2) in the A-3 title game.

Uranga completed 10 of 24 passes for 213 yards as the Trojans overcame an early 14-6 deficit and completed the season at 12-0.

Firth finished 10-2.

Uranga’s heroics overshadowed the mileage chalked up by Firth running back Dan Messick, who compiled 135 yards rushing on 12 carries, as well as scoring two touchdowns on his first three carries.

The Cougars struck first on Messick’s 79-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.

Homedale cut the margin to 7-6 in the first quarter, when Uranga connected with Shanley on a 45-yard scoring pass. Messick ran 40 yards to give Firth an eight-point lead.

Uranga and the Trojans were just getting started. He tossed scoring passes of 60 and 25 yards, and ran two yards for another touchdown in the final three quarters.

Messick threw a scoring pass of his own, a 63-yarder to receiver Rigo Vasquel, cutting Homedale’s lead to 23-21.

But with 3:32 to go, Uranga found Shanley in the end zone on third and 15 to push the Trojans to the final margin.
