Ewu Men Look For Third Win Tonight

Eastern Washington will try to improve on its 2-0 men’s basketball start tonight when the Eagles entertain Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo at 7:05 in a nonleague game at Reese Court.

Cal Poly comes in 3-0 after lop-sided wins over Arkansas State, Cal Baptist and Simon Fraser, and features one of the top scoring young guards in the country.

Sophomore Mike Wozniak, the freshman of the year in the Big West Conference last winter, is averaging 22 points a game.

Eastern, picked to finish seventh in the Big Sky, has been led by senior forward Karim Scott, who is averaging 16 points and seven rebounds a game. The Eagles are coming off an impressive 69-52 home win over San Diego State last Saturday.

Idaho women lose third in a row

The Idaho women’s basketball team lost its third straight game Monday, 79-66 at San Jose State.

UI turned the ball over 36 times compared to the Spartans’ 24.

“We couldn’t catch it. We dribbled it off our feet,” fourth-year Idaho coach Julie Holt said. “I don’t think we’ve had 36 turnovers since I’ve coached here. If I can’t get these guys prepared to play, obviously I need to do a better job at coaching.”

The Vandals (0-3) haven’t lost three in a row to open the season since Holt’s first year in 1994-95.

Sasha Spalding led the Spartans (1-2) with game highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Natasha Johnson added 17 points and four assists coming off the bench for San Jose State.

Alli Nieman scored a team-high 20 points for the Vandals, but had eight turnovers.

Three Bulldogs honored

Three Gonzaga sophomores were honored for their performances in leading the Bulldogs to a surprising title in the Top of the World men’s basketball tournament during the weekend in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Guard Matt Santangelo, who scored 47 points in three games, including 19 in each of the last two, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Named to the first all-tournament team were forward Axel Dench, who scored 40 points, and guard Richie Frahm, who netted 37, including 24 in the opener.
