Gingrich Comes To Aid Of Chenoweth Campaign House Speaker To Headline Fund-Raiser For Third-Term Run

Associated Press

House Speaker Newt Gingrich will be the main attraction at a Jan. 13 campaign fund-raiser for conservative Idaho Republican Helen Chenoweth.

It will mark the third straight campaign that the Republican speaker will stump for Chenoweth, who is mounting her third - and what she has said will be her final - campaign for Congress.

Gingrich helped boost Chenoweth in her successful 1994 challenge of incumbent Democrat Larry LaRocco and then returned last year for another campaign gathering - although it was delayed many months after Chenoweth crossed the speaker and voted against his position on a budget issue.

Chenoweth, who is facing millionaire businessman Tony Paquin of Coeur d’Alene in the May primary, has also gotten the support of New York Republican Congressman Bill Paxon, who was in the doghouse with Gingrich earlier this year for his involvement in an alleged attempt to oust the speaker.

Chenoweth spent more than $1 million in 1996 to secure her re-election, setting a record for spending in an Idaho U.S. House race.
