Lethargic Lc Triumphs

Idaho prep basketball

After sleepwalking for 3-1/2 quarters, the Lake City High girls basketball team awoke just in time to put out about 4 solid minutes of play.

Although Sandpoint’s effort was commendable, even a half-asleep LC team was too much for the talent-challenged Bulldogs. The visiting Timberwolves captured the inaugural Border League game Tuesday 59-33 in Bulldogs Gym.

Sandpoint coach Duane Ward applauded his team’s hustle, but figures all the Bulldogs did was wake up the Timberwolves.

And they did. LC coach Dave Stockwell assured his players that they would make up for their lackadaisical performance with an ardent practice today.

What was Stockwell pleased with the most?

“About the last 2 minutes of the fourth quarter,” he said.

Anything else?

“I thought our intensity wasn’t as high as it should have been,” added Stockwell, whose No. 1-ranked team improved to 4-0 overall. “Sandpoint played its heart out. Duane’s teams (Duane Ward) always do. We didn’t play bad, we just didn’t play as good as we could.”

Stockwell admitted it’s not always easy for a team to be mentally ready to play another team they should beat decisively.

“It’s no big secret there. They know they’re a better team so you can’t even trick the girls into thinking (they’re playing an equal opponent),” Stockwell said. “Because of tonight, they’ll take something home that they’ll need for the season - that they need to play at a certain level, regardless of who they’re playing.”

After LC zipped to a 10-0 lead, Sandpoint (1-3) fought back to 10-8 in the early seconds of the second quarter.

Ward called all but two of his timeouts in the first half, hoping to keep the T-Wolves from blowing out his team.

The strategy worked.

A second 10-0 spurt, though, put LC ahead 20-8, and the T-Wolves took a 28-14 advantage into halftime.

A 3-point basket by Lindsay Herbert gave Lake City its biggest lead at 37-22 with 2:02 remaining in the third quarter.

In the final quarter, LC started to attack Sandpoint’s extended zone defense better. The T-Wolves took advantage of their height advantage by getting the ball in ideal scoring position down low to 6-4 senior post Alison Asher.

Asher scored nine of her game-high 18 points in the final 8 minutes. She added six rebounds and four blocked shots.

A short basket by Asher off a nice feed from Herbert gave LC its biggest lead at 57-31 with two minutes left.

Asher and Herbert, who had 14 points, both learned this week that they were named Street & Smith magazine’s high school All-American honorable mentions.

LC’s Laura Dodge added 10 points. LC’s final 16 points were divided equally between Kellie Stern and Kelley McCabe.

Tarrah Allmaras led Sandpoint with 14 points.
