Bernice Stime Riverside Year: Senior Sport: Soccer Position: Midfielder

Bernice Stime can succeed at a sport without knowing anything about it.

Imagine her ability in soccer, a sport she has played for 10 years.

Stime capped a successful four years in Riverside soccer last weekend when the Rams defeated Sultan 2-1 for the State 2A championship.

Riverside (20-0) allowed five goals all year. Its toughest match, Stime said, was last Friday’s semifinal, a 1-0 shootout with Othello.

Othello scouted Riverside and knew of Stime’s tendency to head in corner kicks. Othello surrounded Stime and team scoring leader Larissa Mueller, but the Rams’ defense was equally stingy.

This is Stime’s last shot at soccer, as she and Lauri Faraschuk are the seniors on the roster. Next up for Stime are basketball, in which she plays point guard, and tennis.

Stime is unbeaten in league matches during three years of tennis. She’d never played tennis until her freshman year, and admits she didn’t know how to score the game at first.

Stime’s aunt, who has offered a few pointers, spent a few years playing professional tennis after a career at the University of Washington.

The close-knit family remains within shouting distance, even on school days. In a professional building across from Riverside High, Stime’s father works as a doctor, her mother as a nurse and her uncle as a dentist.
