400-Pound Mountain Goat Dies At Zoo

Associated Press

Calgary, at more than 400 pounds the world’s largest Rocky Mountain goat according to the Guinness Book of Records, has died at the age of 10 at Woodland Park Zoo.

“He will be missed dearly because he had such character,” zoo keeper Gregg Thompson said.

“During his prime he was an aggressive, dominant male mountain goat, just like he was supposed to be.”

Calgary was euthanized Wednesday by zoo veterinarians due to problems related to his age.

Rocky Mountain goats live 8 to 10 years in the wild, the zoo said.

Calgary was suffering pain related to kidney function and joint problems, and a preliminary necropsy revealed deterioration in his lungs, zoo officials said in a news release.

Calgary arrived at Woodland Park in 1988 from the Calgary Zoo in Calgary, Alberta.

His death leaves two Rocky Mountain goats in the zoo’s Northern Trail Exhibit.
