Blue Jays Sign Pair

Compiled From Wire Services

The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to minor-league contracts with infielders Craig Grebeck and Pat Kelly.

Grebeck, 32, spent last season with the Anaheim Angels, hitting .270 with one home run and six RBIs. Grebeck, who also has played for the Chicago White Sox and Florida Marlins, has a .253 career average with 14 homers and 125 RBIs.

Kelly, 30, played for the New York Yankees last season, hitting .240 with two homers and 10 RBIs. The second baseman has spent his entire seven-season career with the Yankees, batting .251 with 26 home runs and 183 RBIs in 591 games.

Both players will be invited to spring training.

Dave Nelson, the Cleveland Indians’ first base coach for the last six seasons, will not be brought back for next season.

Nelson, 53, wasn’t rehired at least in part because he’s been unable to throw batting practice since rotator cuff surgery after the 1996 season.
